Matthews went to Southern University in the late ’40s and early ’50s, quarterbacking his teams to a 37-4 record. He was an assistant to Dick Vermeil at UCLA, then went up to San Francisco as the 49ers running backs coach from 1979 through 1982. He, like many of the team’s coaches, was a big racquetball player. Matthews then coached for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions before retiring in 1995. He died in late 2001 in Redwood City.
