Ricky Patton was the 49ers leading rusher by yards in 1981. He spent his teenage years in Flint, Michigan, then went to Jackson State, where his distant relative, Walter Payton, had starred before him. His coach there said: “Rickey Patton is one of the best running backs ever to come through Jackson State University. He reminds you of Walter Payton. He is quick getting to the outside and strong running on the inside. His greatest asset is his ability to avoid tacklers.”
Ricky starred his NFL career with the Falcons; he moved on to the Packers before winding up at Candlestick in 1980. He played just one game in 1982 to end his NFL career. He’s now living near Atlanta and is the father of Janssen Patton, who starred at defensive back at Bowling Green State early this decade.
