In O.J.’s last game, the 49ers lost, of course, to wind up a 2-14 season. The biggest reason for all those losses was the defense giving up 416 points, or 26 per game, to rank 27th out of 28 NFL teams. Steve DeBerg went 29 of 53 for 345 yards in that game against Atlanta to wind up the season 347 of 577, both new NFL records that broke Fran Tarkenton’s old records of 345 completions in 572 attempts. For the season, Montana went 13 of 23 with one touchdown, and Dwight Clark caught 18 balls for 232 yards and no touchdowns. In that last game, he had five catches for 69 yards. But, he was blamed for DeBerg’s interception because he slowed down on his route for some reason, letting a Falcon linebacker named Robert Pennywell catch the pass and return it for a touchdown to break the game open in the fourth quarter. Montana didn’t get into that final game, which was a 31-21 Falcons win.
