Ray Wersching was, of course, the 49ers’ longtime Austria-born kicker, from 1977 through 1987. But his career actually started with the Chargers in 1973 after having gone to Cal-Berkeley. He was an accountant in the offseason during his career, and lived in San Diego during the offseason as of the early ’80s.
Wersching was indicted on fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion charges in 2006, for his Farmers Insurance office in Redwood City. I don’t know if the charges were dropped, a settlement was reached, or Wersching was convicted.
