Late in the 1981 season, Harty was described as “a rookie farm boy from Iowa” who was a newlywed “still trying to get used to the Bay Area.” He had been an all-Big Ten defensive lineman at Iowa four years running, was drafted by the 49ers in the second round of the 1981 draft. A 49er from 1981 through ‘86, he missed the 18-1 1984 season. After leaving the NFL, Harty went back to Iowa, Sioux City more specifically, and was president of the now-defunct Westmar University, and recently named CEO of Prince Manufacturing, which makes hydraulic cylinders, valves, pumps, and motors.
